Authorities in Chicago’s South Loop are currently investigating a series of car break-ins, with reports indicating that at least 25 vehicles have been targeted. Despite eyewitnesses providing some leads, law enforcement has yet to make any arrests.
Investigators are striving to determine the motive behind the vandalism and ascertain if any items were stolen during the incidents.
The vandalism occurred around 2 a.m., according to one eyewitness. They informed the police that three individuals exited a black sedan around that time and proceeded to smash the driver’s side window of multiple vehicles along South Indiana Ave. The incidents seemed to span from 13th Street to 16th Street.
Authorities state that the motive for the vandalism remains unclear. The vehicles were legally parked, and police are still investigating whether anything was taken from the cars in question. However, there is no doubt about the profound shock experienced by some of the car owners affected by the spree.
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, one owner, Hamzeh Natsheh, expressed his dismay, calling it a depressing experience. “You work so hard, and you think you’re living in a nice area with the amount of rent that we pay. It’s unbelievable… The property value is so high and you live in an area you can’t even park your car.”
According to local news outlet WGN, police continued to monitor the area long after the crime but had not made any arrests as of early Friday. Nevertheless, another resident, Ronnie Ata, appears to have come to terms with the situation.
“Honestly, I’m not too surprised,” Ata remarked. “It’s the second time it’s happened so I guess I’m not gonna cry over spilled milk. Like I said, I have a lot to be thankful for. It is a difficult area but I’m not gonna let it get to me.” With the investigation ongoing, individuals with information that could aid in apprehending the culprits are urged to contact the Chicago Police Department.
