The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action to ensure the safety of its citizens by dislodging traders who were selling goods on rail lines following a concerning video that went viral depicting a train dangerously close to these traders.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), aims to prevent potential accidents on the rail tracks.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources confirmed this move in a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized the government’s commitment to consistently enforce measures to safeguard lives and property.

Wahab stated, “In response to the viral video showing traders conducting business on the rail lines, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), has initiated immediate and sustained enforcement to clear the rail tracks.”

Furthermore, Wahab announced the eviction of traders operating along the Pen Cinema and Agege rail lines, accompanied by the demolition of their makeshift structures, as part of the government’s intensified efforts to address this issue.

He stated, “Today, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) escalated their efforts against traders on the rail lines by evicting those situated at Pen Cinema, Agege rail line, and demolishing their shanties.”

In response to the alarming video, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) issued a reminder emphasizing the paramount importance of safety on rail tracks.

They underscored that railway tracks are designated solely for trains and that anyone present on the tracks is considered trespassing, emphasizing the need for heightened safety awareness.
