As the much-anticipated launch of the BMW M5 G90 draws nearer this year, a recent leak on the Bimmer Post forum aims to provide additional information about the performance sedan ahead of its arrival.
According to the leak, the 2025 BMW M5 is expected to boast 718 horsepower, marking a significant increase of 100 hp compared to the outgoing F90 model.
This enhanced power is attributed to a plug-in hybrid V8 engine, a detail confirmed by the Bavarian automaker towards the end of last year. Interestingly, this powertrain is identical to the one found in the BMW XM.
However, it’s worth noting that the flagship performance SUV is capable of producing up to 738 hp in its top-spec Label form, ensuring that it maintains its status as the most powerful M car ever.
Breaking down the plug-in hybrid powertrain, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine is set to deliver 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque on its own. It will be complemented by an electric motor generating 194 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque.
This hybrid setup will be powered by a battery pack with a usable capacity of 18.6 kWh, slightly lower than the XM’s 25.7 kWh capacity. However, there’s a downside as the upcoming M5 is expected to face a significant weight increase, reportedly tipping the scales at about 5,368 pounds.
For comparison, the standard 5 Series (G60) weighs in at 4,041 lbs, while the all-electric BMW i5, despite having larger batteries, is lighter than the M5 by 121 lbs. In terms of dimensions, the G90 is rumored to be 1.4 inches longer and 2.8 inches wider than the G60, with a slightly longer wheelbase.
This suggests that the upcoming M car could measure approximately 200.6 inches in length and 77.5 inches in width, with the height likely remaining unchanged at 59.6 inches. Additional leaked specifications include standard 20-inch front wheels wrapped in 285/40 tires and 21-inch rear wheels with 295/35 tires, along with a transition to the next-gen Panoramic Vision by March 2027.
Insider information suggests that production of the BMW G90 M5 sedan will run from July 2024 to February 2031. Meanwhile, production of the G99 M5 Touring wagon version is expected to begin later in November, with a rumored US debut slated for late 2024 or early 2025.
