The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser’s official EPA mileage ratings have been revealed, and they have fallen short of initial expectations. The hybrid SUV, powered by a four-cylinder engine, achieved a combined EPA fuel economy of 23 mpg, which is below the 27 mpg forecasted by Toyota last fall.
Despite the lower-than-anticipated ratings, the 2024 model still represents a significant improvement over its predecessor. The previous generation Land Cruiser, equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V-8 engine, had a fuel economy rating of just 14 mpg.
The new Land Cruiser is equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine paired with a hybrid setup known as i-Force Max. This configuration generates 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The EPA city mileage rating stands at 22 mpg, while the highway rating is 25 mpg.
Sharing a platform with the recently redesigned Lexus GX, the 2024 Land Cruiser bears a resemblance to its midsized counterpart. However, the Lexus GX features a standard 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, producing 349 horsepower, with estimated city and highway mileage of 15 mpg and 21 mpg, respectively.
In terms of pricing, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser starts at $57,345 and can go up to $76,345 depending on trim levels and optional features, including destination charges. Meanwhile, the 2024 Lexus GX is priced between $64,250 and $81,250.
The Land Cruiser lineup includes two grades: the base model, named Land Cruiser 1958, paying homage to the vehicle’s long history dating back to 1958 in the U.S. and 1954 in Japan. There is an upgraded trim simply named Land Cruiser that offers enhanced luxury features. A limited run of First Edition models will also be available.
All Land Cruiser models come equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system featuring advanced capabilities such as a locking center differential, low-range gearing, crawl control, and hill descent control.
