Law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles, including the LAPD and Los Angeles County Sheriffs, have intensified their efforts to combat street takeovers, a nuisance characterized by disruptive activities on roadways.
Task forces have been deployed to thwart these events proactively, resulting in numerous arrests and vehicle impoundments associated with such incidents.
However, an unexpected consequence of these takeovers has emerged: a surge in thefts of Chevrolet Camaros, a trend that has seen a staggering increase of over 1000 percent in Los Angeles this year.
According to a report by the LA Times, the prevalence of Camaro thefts for takeover purposes has reached unprecedented levels. Within the first three months of the year, the city has witnessed the theft of 90 Camaros, a stark contrast to the mere seven stolen in the entirety of 2023.
This alarming spike in thefts has been particularly notable in certain areas, such as one of LAPD’s South LA stations, where local Camaro thefts surged from two to ten between January and February alone.
Compounding the issue is the suspected use of sophisticated devices to clone ignition keys for stealing these vehicles. Law enforcement authorities revealed the apprehension of a 16-year-old suspect in possession of a similar device capable of bypassing the vehicle’s security system.
This handheld computer facilitates the creation of replacement smart keys, allowing unauthorized access to Camaros and other vehicles. Following their use in street takeovers, stolen Camaros are reportedly being sold on social media platforms for substantial sums.
While the specific device employed for these thefts was not disclosed by the authorities, similar incidents have been observed by other local law enforcement agencies. In response to this concerning trend, authorities are urging vehicle owners to implement preventive measures to safeguard their cars.
Recommendations include the use of fuel cut-off systems, steering wheel locks, and exploration of aftermarket security devices capable of thwarting key fob transmitter signals.
