The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated a preliminary inquiry on Monday concerning approximately 250,712 Honda Insight and Honda Passport vehicles due to reports of unintended activation of automatic emergency braking.
According to the NHTSA report, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received 46 complaints, including accounts of three crashes or fires and two injuries.
The issue with the emergency brake impacts Honda Insight models from 2019 to 2022, characterized by their hybrid electric design, as well as the Honda Passport SUV.
The inadvertent activation of the automatic emergency braking system poses a heightened risk of collisions, potentially resulting in injuries and property damage, as outlined by the NHTSA.
Honda’s North American office has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
A preliminary evaluation, representing the initial phase of an NHTSA investigation, entails a thorough examination of consumer complaints or manufacturer service bulletins indicating the potential existence of a safety defect.
