In recent years, the surge in interest in electric drivetrains has led to the emergence of electric variants of vehicles previously unimaginable. One such standout is the eSled by Aurora Powertrains, an electric snowmobile boasting impressive specifications.
Originating from Finland’s Lapland University of Applied Sciences, the eSled is part of a publicly funded project that is potentially earmarked for local transport applications. Earlier iterations of eSleds have already been utilized in such capacities, reflecting a broader trend of EVs entering public ride-sharing services.
Initiated in 2011, the development of an electric snowmobile took shape when Lapland University dispatched a team to Houghton, USA, in 2015. Among them was future CEO and founder of Aurora Powertrains, Matti Autioniemi. By 2017, Aurora was established, setting the stage for continued innovation.
Presently, after years of research and development, the eSled is available for pre-order. Priced starting from €15,000 ($16,300), the eSled is adaptable for business-to-business transactions, suggesting fleet deployment strategies are in consideration.
Aurora emphasizes the eSled’s ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, tailored for Arctic Circle usage where temperatures can plummet to -40 degrees Celsius. To maintain operational reliability, the electrical system is engineered to endure such harsh environments.
Each battery pack incorporates components to regulate temperature, ensuring consistent startup performance and optimizing battery life and recharge rates.
Furthermore, the eSled offers flexibility by accommodating multiple battery packs, with energy capacities ranging from 7 to 21 kWh, providing an estimated range of 100 km (62 mi) while weighing approximately 270 kg (595 lbs).
Equipped with configurable motors, delivering 50 kW (67 hp) and 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) of torque via a fixed gear ratio belt drive, the eSled offers customization options to suit varied preferences and applications.
Focusing on performance and efficiency, Aurora has prioritized weight reduction and structural rigidity, complemented by adjustable ski pressure and advanced suspension dynamics. The eSled’s design optimizes weight distribution for enhanced handling and maneuverability.
Incorporating modern features such as an intuitive dashboard, DC fast charging, and a dedicated app for diagnostics and fleet management, the eSled embodies cutting-edge technology poised to revolutionize snowmobiling experiences.
For enthusiasts seeking firsthand experience, Aurora encourages test rides in Finland, showcasing the culmination of years of snowmobiling R&D.
