Lagos Blue Line Embraces Sustainability with New Independent Power Plant
In a significant move towards enhancing the efficiency and dependability of the Lagos State Blue Line Rail, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has unveiled the completion and commencement of test runs for an Independent Power Plant.
This newly introduced power facility serves as a backup system to the primary power supply sourced from the national grid via the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, specifically from its Ijora and Akongba substations.
At the core of this initiative lies the Blue Line system’s innovative Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS) system, strategically distributed across six substations along the corridor. This setup ensures a consistent flow of electricity to the entire train network, encompassing the stations as well.
Activated in the event of grid supply failure or deviation beyond tolerance thresholds, the Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply leverages stored energy in the flywheel to propel the electrical generator. This seamless transition guarantees an uninterrupted power supply until the diesel engine seamlessly takes over.
During a recent inspection of the Blue Line’s Independent Power Plant on March 13th, 2024, a delegation led by Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, Director of Rail Transport at LAMATA, was provided with a comprehensive overview of the system’s installation and operational functionality.
Expressing his sentiments during the visit, Engr. Okusaga lauded the magnitude of the Blue Line’s power infrastructure. He emphasized the government’s satisfaction with the scalability of the system, affirming its capacity to meet the energy demands of the entire line, extending up to Okokomaiko.
The introduction of this independent power solution not only underscores LAMATA’s commitment to enhancing the reliability of the Lagos State Blue Line Rail but also marks a significant stride towards sustainability within the public transportation sector.
