Volkswagen: No Plans For ID Buzz Camper Version At The Moment

Speculation has swirled around the possibility of a camper version of the Volkswagen ID Buzz, albeit often tinged with skepticism. Back in August, a German magazine suggested that such a camper Buzz might exceed the weight limits for a standard passenger car driver’s license.

However, Volkswagen’s Lars Krause debunks this notion. As the Sales and Marketing Chief of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Krause asserts that such technological hurdles are surmountable.

He clarifies that the absence of an ID Buzz camper isn’t due to weight concerns, but rather a lack of market demand. Krause explains, “We always start with the market… the need for such a vehicle—an electric camper—is simply not present at the moment.”

Yet, the current absence of market demand doesn’t signify a permanent state of affairs. Krause anticipates a shift in the coming years, foreseeing increased interest in electric campers in the latter half of the decade. Consequently, he doesn’t discount the possibility of a Volkswagen ID Buzz California model emerging sometime between 2025 and 2030.

The tradition of Volkswagen vans serving as campers is nearly as old as the vans themselves. Given that the electric ID Buzz draws inspiration from the classic T1 and T2 buses, it’s unsurprising that enthusiasts periodically advocate for a camper variant based on this modern iteration.

This sentiment is bolstered by Volkswagen’s status as one of the few brands offering camper vans directly, notably through the California series based on the Transporter and Crafter platforms.
