Securing the lead on lap 12 after Francesco Bagnaia’s error at Turn 1, Vinales withstood pressure first from Marc Marquez and then Jorge Martin, clinching victory in the half-distance race at Portimao by just over a second.

This triumph marked his premier class victory on the Aprilia RS-GP and ended a victory drought dating back to the 2021 season opener in Qatar.

While Vinales had attained podiums since joining Aprilia after his contentious departure from Yamaha in mid-2021, he had yet to replicate the remarkable speed that earned him nine Grand Prix victories.

By conquering the Ducatis of Marquez and Martin in Portugal, especially at the beginning of his final contract year with Aprilia, Vinales hailed the result as a significant relief.

“I’m genuinely delighted to close this chapter,” he expressed. “Finally. It’s a massive relief. I’m thrilled to showcase the confidence and potential we possess.”

He added, “I’m eager to return to the garage, address a few areas for improvement, and prepare for tomorrow’s race. It’s going to be a demanding race, particularly with tire management, so understanding our requirements is crucial.”

While Bagnaia surged to the front at the race’s onset, a braking error at Turn 1 compromised his position, relegating him from contention for the podium.

Acknowledging Bagnaia’s early pace, Vinales praised his ability to fend off the Ducatis with worn tires. “The truth is, Pecco was exceptionally quick at the start,” Vinales remarked.

“He rapidly gained a significant lead, but I gradually closed the gap. When I noticed his mistake, I knew maintaining my pace would make it challenging for others to overtake. Ultimately, clinching Aprilia’s maiden victory is surreal.”
