Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are facing a significant challenge as they recall over 147,000 electric vehicles due to potential power loss issues arising from a damaged Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). The ramifications of this recall extend to several models across these brands, encompassing the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, and the Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80.

In a recent development reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these automakers have initiated the recall process to address concerns related to the ICCU. This crucial component, responsible for managing the charging system, has been found to malfunction, leading to a cessation of the 12-volt battery charging process.

Consequently, this disruption in charging can result in a loss of power to the vehicle’s wheels, posing potential safety risks. The recall encompasses a broad spectrum of electric vehicles manufactured by Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. Hyundai alone is recalling nearly 98,878 units, including models from its Luxury brand, Genesis.

The affected Hyundai vehicles include the Ioniq 5, spanning the 2022 to 2024 model years, as well as the Ioniq 6 from 2023 and 2024. The Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80 from 2023 and 2024 are also included in the recall. Kia is facing its share of the challenge, with 48,232 units of its electric EV6 from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 model years being recalled.

To rectify the issue, authorized dealerships for these brands will conduct thorough inspections and replace the faulty ICCU and its fuse, if necessary. Additionally, a comprehensive software update for the ICCU will be performed, all at no cost to the vehicle owners.

Affected Hyundai and Genesis owners can expect to receive notification letters starting from May 14, while Kia owners will receive their notifications earlier, beginning on April 29. This recall underscores the commitment of these automakers to ensuring the safety and reliability of their electric vehicle offerings, prioritizing customer satisfaction and peace of mind.
