The Hyundai Group keeps winning big awards for its cars, especially for electric ones. In 2020, Kia won the World Car of the Year award with the Telluride, the World Performance Car award with the EV6 GT, and the World Urban Car award with the Kia Soul EV. Then, in 2021, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 won the 2022 World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle, and World Car Design of the Year.
In 2023, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 also won these three awards. Now, Kia is back on top with the new EV9 winning the 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle awards at the New York Auto Show. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N also won the World Performance Car award.
A hundred car experts from 29 countries tested 38 vehicles to decide the winners. To enter, a car must be produced in over 10,000 units annually, sold in at least two major global markets, and priced below luxury options in those regions. The EV9 beat the BYD Seal and the Volvo EX30 for the World Car of the Year title.
In the electric category, the EV9 competed with 32 other cars, defeating the BMW i5 and the Volvo EX30. The BMW 5 Series and i5 won the World Luxury Car title, and the EX30 won the World Urban Car award.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N won among 16 performance cars, beating cars like the M2 and XM.
A surprise winner was the Toyota Prius, an iconic hybrid car. It won the 2024 World Car Design of the Year award, surpassing 70 other entries, including the Ford Bronco and the Ferrari Purosangue.
