People who want to buy Xiaomi’s new electric cars might have to wait a long time, Reuters said.
Xiaomi told possible buyers that they might have to wait from four to seven months to get their SU7 electric car. This information comes from Xiaomi’s car app.
Just last week, Xiaomi introduced its first electric car, called Speed Ultra 7 (SU7), at a big event in Beijing. Within one day of the launch, nearly 89,000 people had already ordered the car, according to Reuters.
This news comes after Apple, another big phone company, gave up on making its electric cars. They had been working on it for ten years, but they had many problems with the design and leadership changes, Bloomberg said.
Even though the long wait times could show that many people want the SU7, Xiaomi is entering the electric car market at a difficult time.
The market for electric cars has been getting smaller, and there are many other companies in China making electric cars.
Big companies like Tesla and BYD have been lowering their prices to try to get more customers.
Xiaomi’s basic SU7 costs 215,900 yuan, which is about $30,000. That’s less than Tesla’s Model 3 in China, which costs about 30,000 yuan more.
The Pro version costs 245,900 yuan, or about $34,000, and the Max version costs 299,900 yuan, or about $41,500.
Experts who talked to Reuters think Xiaomi could do well because they’re good at making smartphones. They might be able to use that knowledge to make smart dashboards for their cars.
Xiaomi also has a lot of money saved up, so it might be able to handle the tough competition in China’s electric car market.
