German automaker BMW has announced a partnership with Indian company Tata Technologies to establish a development center dedicated to electric vehicle software. While BMW has similar centers in other countries, this collaboration with Tata in India is notable for tapping into the country’s abundant software engineering talent pool.
Christoph Grote, BMW’s Senior Vice President of Software and E/E Architecture, emphasized the significance of the partnership in advancing the development of software-defined vehicles. He highlighted the opportunity for Indian software engineers to contribute to cutting-edge automotive experiences, particularly in areas like highly automated driving and artificial intelligence.
The collaboration holds promise for both BMW and the Indian tech industry. BMW gains access to India’s skilled software professionals to maintain its competitive edge, while Indian engineers get to work on innovative automotive software projects with global significance.
Initially, the joint venture will comprise 100 experienced professionals from Tata Technologies, with plans to expand the workforce to over a thousand engineers in the coming years. The focus will be on automating in-vehicle functions and various aspects of product development, production, and sales, aligning with BMW’s ambitions in software development for its electric vehicles.
As BMW intensifies its software endeavors, this partnership with Tata Technologies is poised to play a pivotal role in accelerating the advancement of its electric cars, underscoring the potential for collaboration between global automotive leaders and India’s thriving tech ecosystem.
