Pelumi Nubi, a 28-year-old UK-based Nigerian travel content creator, recently completed a remarkable solo road trip from London, United Kingdom, to Lagos, Nigeria, arriving after 68 days of driving in a Peugeot 107 Hatchback. Born in Lagos and raised in London, Nubi aimed to bridge the gap between her two homes through this journey.
Commencing on January 30th, 2024, Nubi’s extensive route spanned across various countries including France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and finally Lagos.
Her arrival at the Nigeria-Benin Republic border was met with a warm reception by representatives of the Lagos state government, including Commissioner of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, and Special Adviser, Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe.
Nubi’s motivation for embarking on this extraordinary journey stemmed from her desire to explore West Africa and to personally experience the landscapes and cultures it has to offer. She highlighted the lack of representation in overland travel and saw this trip as an opportunity to fill that void.
Despite the challenges and risks involved, including sleeping in her car by the roadside in deserts and forests, Nubi’s determination remained unwavering. Her father, Professor Nubi Gbenga, expressed gratitude to God for her safe journey, acknowledging the anxieties they faced throughout the trip.
For Nubi, this journey represents not only a physical voyage but also a symbolic connection between her roots and her upbringing. Through her documented experiences, she hopes to inspire others to explore the beauty and diversity of West Africa and to embrace the spirit of adventure and discovery.
