Greenlane, a company focused on charging infrastructure for commercial EVs, has announced plans for a 280-mile network of charging stations linking Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This exciting development will remove a major barrier to long-haul electric freight transportation.

More than 100 chargers will be installed along the corridor, with the initial phase focusing on California’s Interstate 15 in Colton, Barstow, and Baker. The network will eventually extend to Southern Nevada and San Pedro, California, ensuring comprehensive coverage for electric truckers.

The crown jewel of the project will be the Colton flagship station, targeted for a spring groundbreaking and a late 2024 opening. This powerhouse will boast 60 charging points, including powerful 400 kW DC fast chargers and 200 kW options. It won’t be limited to big rigs, though – passenger car charging stalls will also be available.

Looking ahead, Greenlane plans to include designated overnight charging lanes for tractor-trailers and integrate the next-generation Megawatt Charging System once it hits the market.

Here’s the secret sauce behind the network’s design: Greenlane used a special tool to simulate truck traffic and energy needs. This allowed them to strategically place stations roughly 60 to 90 miles apart. This spacing ensures optimal efficiency – shorter charging stops at each station will keep day-cab drivers moving and freight deliveries on schedule.

With this new charging corridor, electric trucks are poised to conquer the LA to Vegas route, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future for long-distance freight hauling.
