Dubai just got slammed with a historic amount of rain, a whole year’s worth in one day, and the city wasn’t prepared for this kind of downpour, and many streets turned into rivers. Most cars got stuck, sputtered out, and were left stranded.
But some electric vehicle (EV) drivers just kept on driving. They were pushing through water that looked like it was over three feet deep in some places.
Why the difference? Regular gasoline-powered cars suck in air to run their engines. If that air intake gets clogged with water, it can cause big problems for the engine. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, don’t need air. Plus, their batteries and motors are usually sealed up tight. So, even if an EV gets almost completely underwater (as long as the electrical bits stay dry), it can still keep moving.
A regular car would have stalled for sure.
Important Safety Note: Even though EVs might seem like little water-proof tanks in these situations, it’s generally NOT safe to drive through floods. The floodwater can be hiding dangers, the current can be strong, and there could be debris floating around that could damage your car. It’s always best to avoid flooded roads if you can.
So, Dubai got hammered with rain, and guess what? Some electric vehicles (EVs) just kept on swimming (well, driving) through floodwaters that would have stopped regular cars cold.
While those EVs in Dubai might have seemed invincible, it’s always best to avoid flooded roads whenever possible. Your car and your safety will thank you for it!.
