Jeep is contemplating the addition of gasoline-powered variants to the electric Wagoneer S and Recon, as disclosed by Jeep’s CEO to Automotive News. Both upcoming electric vehicles (EVs) are slated to be constructed on the versatile STLA Large platform, which can accommodate pure gas and hybrid powertrains.
Additionally, Jeep aims to replace the Cherokee by the conclusion of 2025, following its discontinuation after the 2023 model year. The forthcoming EV debut, the Wagoneer S, is scheduled for this autumn. Earlier this year, the American SUV brand revealed images of the stylish crossover, hinting at features like a 600-hp all-wheel-drive powertrain.
Originally presented alongside the rugged Recon, the Wagoneer S and Recon may potentially offer internal combustion engine options, according to Automotive News. In a recent interview with Jeep’s CEO Antonio Filosa regarding the company’s declining sales, potential solutions included the introduction of gasoline-powered versions of the Recon and Wagoneer S to bolster sales volumes.
Filosa emphasized seizing opportunities for profit with internal combustion powertrains, stating, “We need to grab them or somebody else will.” Both the Recon and Wagoneer S will utilize the STLA Large platform, supporting electric, pure-gas, and hybrid powertrains. This strategic approach aligns with Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, as electric vehicle sales growth slows.
Reports indicate that upcoming vehicles like the 2025 Dodge Charger and next-generation Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio will offer both gasoline and electric options. Additionally, in Europe, Stellantis is offering subcompact crossovers with EVs and hybrid powertrains. Jeep’s focus on revitalizing its presence in the mid-size SUV segment after discontinuing the Cherokee is part of its strategic plan.
Filosa outlined intentions to penetrate the mid-size SUV market, with efforts to fill the Cherokee-sized gap in the lineup by the end of 2025. While the subcompact Renegade was phased out after the 2023 model year, The Jeep Compass has seamlessly transitioned into the entry-level crossover role and experienced a surge in sales.
