The Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad recently arrested a driver who had crammed fifteen children into a Volkswagen Passat station wagon.
Disturbingly, four of these children were found locked in the car’s boot, highlighting the severe overcrowding and unsafe conditions they were subjected to during transportation. Concerned citizens reported the overloaded vehicle on the Lekki–Ikoyi Link Bridge around 8 pm on Sunday.
Upon intervention, the police discovered the alarming situation inside the vehicle. Not only were four children locked in the trunk, but the remaining eleven were crammed together, posing serious risks to their safety and well-being. Preliminary investigations revealed that one child had already collapsed earlier in the day due to similar transportation conditions, emphasizing the dangers of such practices.
Thankfully, the children were released to their parents without any reported injuries. However, the driver and any accomplices involved will face legal consequences as they are set to be charged in court.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, commended the vigilance of residents in promptly alerting the authorities to suspicious activities, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the safety and welfare of all citizens, especially vulnerable children.
