In the past week, several significant developments have occurred in the transportation and security sectors across Lagos and Ogun States, as well as at the federal level in Nigeria. In Lagos, the introduction of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras has proven effective in monitoring traffic violations.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that over 856,000 violations were recorded between January 2023 and March 2024, with 26,816 violations captured in the last three months alone. These cameras, installed at various locations, aim to enhance traffic management and enforcement of regulations.

Meanwhile, in Ogun State, efforts to combat crime have been bolstered with the deployment of cutting-edge technology. PROFORCE Limited showcased its Proforce Eagle 3 drone, equipped with surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, to Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun. The drone is actively employed in the state’s crime-fighting endeavors, marking a significant advancement in law enforcement tactics.

In a bid to revolutionize transportation, the Lagos State Government announced plans to introduce 2,000 new mass transit buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This initiative, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of transportation in the state. Additionally, to address environmental concerns, 250 electric taxis are set to be launched, further contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

At the federal level, the Nigerian government is preparing to deploy the first batch of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles for mass transit operations ahead of the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced plans to allocate N100 billion for the purchase of CNG-powered vehicles and electric buses, along with over 20,000 CNG conversion kits. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable transportation methods nationwide, supported by investments in CNG refilling and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

These developments underscore a concerted effort by government authorities at various levels to modernize transportation systems, enhance security measures, and mitigate environmental impact through the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainable practices.
