The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking into Ford’s BlueCruise system after two deadly crashes. Both crashes involved Mustang Mach-E cars with BlueCruise turned on, and they happened at night when the Fords hit parked cars in their lane.
One of the crashes happened in San Antonio, Texas, on a three-lane highway where the speed limit was 70 miles per hour. The Mach-E hit a car that was stopped in the middle lane with its lights off. The person in that car died.
BlueCruise is a system that helps with driving but the driver still needs to pay attention and be ready to take control. There’s no recall or warning for Ford cars with BlueCruise yet because the investigation just started last week. So, for now, owners don’t need to do anything or stop using BlueCruise.
But it’s always important to remember that even with hands-free driving systems, you have to stay alert in case something goes wrong. This goes for all kinds of driver assist systems, not just BlueCruise.
