Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) have joined forces to establish a seamless transportation network in Lagos, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD). The project aims to integrate water routes with existing road and rail transportation, enhancing connectivity across the city.
Under the initiative, LASWA presented its ‘OMI EKO’ project plans to LAMATA, outlining detailed designs, timelines, and an implementation strategy. This collaborative effort aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s vision of establishing a unified multi-modal integrated transport system for Lagos.
The ‘OMI EKO’ project is poised to significantly enhance connectivity in Lagos by focusing on 10 priority routes, 47 feeder routes, and the construction of 25 ferry terminals. With approximately three-quarters of Lagos’ local government areas and LCDA accessible by water, the project holds immense potential to transform transportation in the megacity.
To promote sustainability, LASWA intends to introduce 78 electric vessels to its fleet, making water travel a more environmentally friendly option for Lagosians. This move reflects a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the environmental impact of transportation in the city.
