Electric car sales are doing great all over the world! In March 2024, people bought 19% more electric cars compared to the same month last year. That’s the third-highest number of electric cars ever sold in a single month! Almost one in five new cars sold in March was electric.
There are two main types of electric cars: fully electric (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Fully electric cars only use electricity and don’t need gas. Plug-in hybrids can use both electricity and gas. Sales of fully electric cars grew a little bit slower than sales of plug-in hybrids in March, but fully electric cars still make up most of the electric car market.
So far this year (through March), electric car sales are up 25% compared to last year. This trend is expected to continue, and by the end of the year, close to 20 million electric cars could be sold worldwide!
The Tesla Model Y remains the most popular electric car in the world, with over 118,000 sold in March. However, a Chinese company called BYD is making a big splash in the electric car market. In March, seven BYD models were among the top 10 best-selling electric cars! The only other two models on the list are the Tesla Model 3 and another BYD car.
Here’s another interesting tidbit: BMW and Mercedes-Benz, known for their luxury cars, are also doing well in the electric car market. They both ranked highly for total electric car sales in March.
