The main car safety agency in the United States is investigating Waymo, a company that makes self-driving cars owned by Alphabet Inc. They are looking into 22 incidents where Waymo’s cars were in accidents or might have broken traffic rules.

These investigations are being done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They are checking reports that Waymo’s cars hit things like gates, chains, and parked cars. They’re also looking at times when the cars didn’t seem to follow traffic signals.

According to NHTSA, in these incidents, Waymo’s system was either active or had just been turned off by the person testing the car. This investigation is looking at around 444 cars, as per documents from the agency.

Waymo, in response, said it’s proud of its safety record. They’ve driven millions of miles without issues. The company promises to help NHTSA with its investigation.

NHTSA has been closely watching other companies too, like Tesla, Ford, and Amazon, to make sure their self-driving systems are safe. They’ve also looked into General Motors’ Cruise for possible problems with their system.
