It took more than six weeks, but finally, the Dali container ship that hit and destroyed the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore has been freed. Engineers used explosives to blow up what was left of the bridge, which had trapped the ship.
Last week, local authorities said they would use controlled demolition to remove the remaining bridge section. This would allow the ship, along with its crew, to be taken back to port for inspections.
Yesterday afternoon, the explosives were set off, causing a loud boom, and parts of the bridge fell into the water. Officials used the explosion to make precise cuts, hoping to release the Dali, which will go back to the Port of Baltimore.
The port, which is very busy and handles many different things, like cars, had been closed after the bridge collapse. But now, some shipping has started again through temporary routes. The US Army Corps of Engineers wants to have everything back to normal by the end of May.
Local news channel WUSA9 News streamed the explosion online. In the video, you can see the bridge section falling into the water after the explosion. Now that the ship is free, workers will check it, and they hope to remove it from the area over the next couple of days. Then, they’ll see if the shipping channel is okay and can be used again for cargo.
