The practice session for the Indy 500 started earlier than planned due to the weather. Rain from the previous day lingered, delaying the start until 3:05 pm ET.
Once the session began, there was a rush of activity among the 34 cars. Scott McLaughlin in the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet quickly rose to the top of the leaderboard with a fast lap of 229.493mph.
Shortly after, Will Power, the 2018 Indy 500 winner, surged into second place with a lap of 228.767mph, just behind his teammate.
Colton Herta from Andretti Global took third place with a speed of 227.858mph, followed by reigning Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden in fourth with 227.675mph, securing the top four spots for Team Penske.
Alexander Rossi from Arrow McLaren claimed fifth place with a lap of 227.484mph.
Other notable performances came from Kyle Kirkwood, Pato O’Ward, Alex Palou, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Helio Castroneves, who rounded out the top 10.
Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, had a solid start to his maiden Indy 500 attempt, completing 54 laps and finishing 15th overall.
Rain interrupted the day’s activities again at 6 pm, forcing an early end to the session despite efforts to dry the track.
Tom Blomqvist from Meyer Shank Racing completed the most laps at 105, while Takuma Sato from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing recorded the fastest speed among cars without a tow, followed by Rinus VeeKay from Ed Carpenter Racing and Agustin Canapino from Juncos Hollinger Racing.
