In Galveston, Texas, a barge hit a bridge on May 15. Oil spilled into the water, and officials had to close the bridge’s eastern side. Part of the rail line beside the bridge also fell into the water, with concrete pieces stacking up on the barge.
Fortunately, no one got hurt at the Pelican Island Bridge, as stated by Galveston city officials. Emergency teams from Galveston, Texas A&M University at Galveston, the state, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Texas Department of Transportation all went to the scene.
“The crash caused an oil spill in the bay,” the city statement said. “The U.S. Coast Guard is handling it and will figure out how big the spill is. They’ll also start cleaning it up.”
The statement added that Texas DOT engineers are checking the road to see if it’s badly damaged. Until they confirm it’s safe, the bridge will stay closed.
This incident happened less than two months after the Key Bridge accident. Remember, in March, a huge container ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. It fell down, and sadly, six workers died.
