Marcus Ericsson, the winner of the 2022 Indianapolis 500, had a scary crash during practice. He was driving behind three other cars when he hit the curb at Turn 4. This caused him to spin around and hit the outside wall. Then, his car spun across the track and hit the inside wall before finally stopping.
The IndyCar Safety Team quickly arrived to help Ericsson. He was able to get out of his car and walk away, but he felt the impact of the crash.
“Yeah, I’m feeling okay. Obviously, it was quite a decent hit… Obviously lost it in the middle there,” Ericsson said after being checked by the medical team. “I think I brushed the curb a little bit and that’s probably enough to send it. And then you’re a passenger, so yeah. Very disappointed.
“Very sorry for my team. They’ve done a very good job and they have a lot of work ahead of them now, so that’s probably the worst of the whole thing.”
This wasn’t the only crash of the day. Another driver, Linus Lundqvist, also crashed after hitting the curb at Turn 2.
Before the crash, Ericsson had completed 79 laps during practice. He was driving for Andretti Global, a team he joined this year after spending the last four years at Chip Ganassi Racing.
UPDATE: Rob Edwards, the COO of Andretti Global, confirmed that Ericsson’s car was too damaged to continue using it. So, the team decided to switch to a backup car.
