With dash cams and cellphones, accidents on the road often become popular on social media. But one recent crash involving a semi-truck made headlines across the country. The driver’s camera recorded the accident that sent her big truck crashing through a guardrail, leaving it hanging over the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, 100 feet above the Ohio River.
The video shows a pickup truck suddenly swerving into Sydney Thomas’ lane after hitting another car from behind. This pushed Thomas’ truck to the left, into the path of oncoming traffic. After smashing through the rails on the other side, the front part of her truck was left hanging off the edge of the bridge. Luckily, the trailer and some parts of the truck stayed on the bridge, and the connection between them was strong enough to keep the truck from falling.
Rescue teams performed a daring rescue, lowering down from the bridge to save Thomas. The driver who caused the accident was seen driving recklessly before the crash. The local district attorney said, “This is a clear example of showing no regard for human life, which could have caused serious injuries or death.”
The driver is facing several charges because of the crash, including reckless endangerment and driving with a suspended license. Thomas is just glad to be alive. Talking to WHAS, she said, “When I crashed through the railing, I thought, ‘This is a horrible way to die.’ He messed up my suspension, so it didn’t matter which way I turned the wheel. I lost control, but I held onto the wheel. I couldn’t move into the other lane.”
Thomas added, “I thought I was going to die. Sometimes, you pray, and I’m guilty of this: I pray, and I don’t think God hears me. But he did that day.”
