Mason Prima, 18, received a harsh lesson that is generating debate in Canada. He was penalized earlier this month for using his phone in a McDonald’s drive-through in order to claim a free meal.

Prima says he unlocked his phone to use a McDonald’s app coupon while his car was barely moving. A police officer pulled him over, and despite explaining he was using the app for the coupon, he received a $425 ticket. Prima plans to contest the fine in court, arguing it’s unfair to be fined while barely moving in a drive-through.

However, the police stated that the violation occurred before Prima entered the drive-through. They claim he was seen using his phone while driving on a public road, and the officer initiated the stop before they reached McDonald’s.

This incident highlights a common issue: many drivers use mobile apps to redeem offers while in drive-through lanes. The court will decide in July whether Prima’s fine will be upheld or dismissed.
