Mazda Australia has announced a recall affecting 509 units of its CX-90 SUV, all built in 2023, due to a potentially hazardous issue with the vehicle’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. The recall was issued after the discovery of a calibration problem within the Vehicle Control Module (VCM), which could cause the AEB system to activate unnecessarily when detecting reflective roadside objects that do not pose a threat.
Mazda explained, “Due to a calibration issue within the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) when driving at low speeds, the vehicle may falsely detect reflective objects such as metal walls, barriers, or similar objects on the side of the road as an approaching object. This may trigger an unintended brake activation. Unintended brake activation could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”
The unintended activation of the AEB system can pose significant risks, including sudden stops in traffic, which could lead to rear-end collisions or other accidents. Recognizing the severity of this potential hazard, Mazda is taking proactive steps to remedy the situation.
Mazda will contact the owners of the affected CX-90 SUVs directly. The company will arrange for these vehicles to be brought in for service at their preferred dealerships, where the VCM will be updated with a revised calibration at no cost to the owner.
Mazda is currently in the process of finalizing the update and will notify owners as soon as the remedy is available. For those who own one of the recalled vehicles, detailed information and assistance can be obtained by contacting Mazda’s dedicated call center at 1800 034 411. The Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) of the affected vehicles are listed in the recall notice.
Mazda is committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of its vehicles and urges all affected CX-90 owners to take prompt action once they receive notification. The company emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue to prevent any potential accidents and ensure the continued safety of all road users.
