In 2024, the Geneva International Motor Show made a comeback after a long break, but it didn’t last. The organizers said the 2024 show was a letdown, especially because not many carmakers took part. So, they decided to stop organizing it.
For many car fans, Geneva was once the most exciting auto show. It was special because Switzerland isn’t known for making cars like France or Germany. So, everyone got a fair chance to shine at the Swiss auto show. But times changed.
In the past, big car companies used Geneva to show off their newest and best models. The Bugatti Chiron, Ferrari LaFerrari, and Porsche 918 Spyder all made their first appearances there. Even smaller companies and car customizers got attention. But things started to go downhill in 2020.
The Swiss government canceled the 2020 show because of the coronavirus. It was a big hit for the organizers who had already spent a lot of money getting ready. They couldn’t make up for it by rescheduling. And things didn’t get better.
In 2021, they decided not to have a show at all. Then, they canceled the 2022 show. And in 2022, they canceled part of the 2023 show. They even tried to have a show in Qatar, but it wasn’t the same. So, they brought the show back to Geneva in 2024, but it wasn’t as good as before.
Not many carmakers came, and fewer people showed up. In its best years, over 600,000 people visited the show, but in 2024, only about 170,000 came. So, the organizers decided to stop having the show altogether.
The president of the organizing committee said they tried hard to make the show successful again, but it wasn’t enough. He mentioned that other auto shows in Paris and Munich were doing better. So, the Geneva auto show will move to Qatar from now on. The next show will be in November 2025. We’ll have to wait and see if carmakers still want to take part.
