A representative from Borg-Warner, who was close to the situation, shared that Jones peacefully passed away from natural causes at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrence, California. He was surrounded by his family.
Jones was a famous racer, best known for winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1963. He was born on August 12, 1933, in Texarkana, Arkansas. His mother named him after a local judge she admired, Rufus Parnell.
He started racing when he was just 17 years old, using the name “Parnellie” to hide his age. Over the years, he competed in different racing classes and won many races, including 15 wins in NASCAR’s late model series on the West Coast.
In 1960, he won a Sprint Car title in the Midwest region, which was a big achievement for him. This caught the attention of J.C. Agajanian, a notable figure in racing.
Jones made his mark at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1961, winning the Rookie of the Year award. He returned the next year, setting a record by qualifying over 150mph. In 1963, he finally won the Indy 500, leading 167 laps.
Throughout his career, Jones continued to excel in racing. He also competed in off-road racing and NASCAR, winning several races. In 1969, he formed Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing, which achieved significant success in the Indy 500.
After retiring from full-time racing due to an accident in 1974, Jones remained active as a team owner. His team continued to achieve success, with drivers like Mario Andretti and Walker Evans.
Jones received many honors throughout his career, including inductions into several Halls of Fame. He is survived by his wife Judy, sons PJ and Page, and grandchildren Jagger, Jace, Jimmy, Joie, Jet, and Moxie.
