Forge Battery has introduced a significant advancement in cylindrical lithium-ion battery technology with its Gen. 1.1 Supercell. While this format traditionally compromises energy density, Forge Battery has managed to boost it by 20% to 300 Wh/kg through innovations in anode and cathode materials.

The core of this improvement lies in a silicon oxide graphite composite anode, which increases energy density while reducing the need for electrolyte additives. The cathode, composed of NMC 811, is a standard choice but carries inherent thermal runaway risks.

To mitigate this, Forge Battery has developed Atomic Armor, a coating that prevents unwanted chemical reactions and significantly enhances battery safety. Rigorous testing, including inducing thermal runaway in a controlled environment, has demonstrated the effectiveness of Atomic Armor in preventing fire propagation to neighboring cells.

Forge Battery is poised to supply its A-sample cells to a growing customer base, including both established clients and potential partners, following the acquisition of crucial UN 38.3 and UL 1642 certifications.

These certifications validate the cells’ stringent safety standards, enabling their transportation and positioning Forge Battery as a key player in the burgeoning US electric vehicle market. The company’s strategic importance is amplified by the Inflation Reduction Act, which imposes escalating domestic content requirements for electric vehicles to qualify for substantial tax incentives.

While many automakers are investing heavily in domestic cell production to meet these mandates, Forge Battery holds a significant advantage with its existing US-based manufacturing facility and a product already exceeding the act’s eventual domestic content benchmarks.
