The Mercury Cougar, a sophisticated sibling to the Mustang, carved its niche in the pony car segment. Despite sharing a platform with its more aggressive counterpart, the Cougar aimed to appeal to a refined audience.

Its XR-7 trim offered European-inspired luxury, featuring a walnut interior, full instrumentation, and a unique overhead console. The Cougar’s exterior, while unmistakably a pony car, boasted a more mature and streamlined design with hidden headlights.

Its tuned suspension provided a comfortable ride, differentiating it from the Mustang. While the Mustang often overshadowed its sibling, the Cougar remains a highly desirable classic.

The combination of its luxurious interior, distinctive styling, and comfortable ride made it a unique offering in the pony car market. The Cougar’s focus on refinement and sophistication set it apart from its competitors, creating a lasting appeal for enthusiasts who sought something beyond the typical muscle car.

The 1967 Mercury Cougar presents a classic blend of style and performance. While the rear window exhibits some signs of corrosion, the vehicle has undergone several cosmetic and mechanical upgrades. Notably, the headlight vacuum motors have been rebuilt, and exterior components such as the fender-well trim, door handles, emblems, lenses, and scuff plates have been replaced.

The Cougar rides on chrome-style wheels wrapped in 205/75 Michelin tires, providing a comfortable and stylish ride. Power steering and power-assisted front disc brakes enhance the driving experience, complemented by rear drum brakes.

Inside, the cabin features black vinyl front bucket seats and a rear bench seat, along with woodgrain trim, branded floor mats, a custom glove compartment, and a tilting steering column. The interior’s classic design and comfortable seating make it a pleasant place to be.

Under the hood, a rebuilt 289 ci V8 engine, producing 225 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque, delivers ample power for spirited driving. The engine is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission, which was also rebuilt in 1998.

Although this is the entry-level V8 option, it offers a satisfying driving experience that is suitable for most enthusiasts. The 1967 Mercury Cougar is a well-maintained classic car that offers a combination of style, performance, and comfort. Its classic design, upgraded components, and reliable engine make it a desirable choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
