The A-29 Super Tucano, a relatively unknown aircraft until recently, has been quietly gaining traction among military aviators worldwide. Despite its relatively short history of just two decades, this Brazilian-made turboprop has proven its versatility in various roles, from attack missions to border patrol and training.

Its impressive performance and affordability have made it a popular choice for air forces around the globe. Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney engine, the Super Tucano can reach speeds of up to 370 mph and has a range of over 800 miles. Its robust construction and advanced avionics make it a reliable and capable platform for a variety of missions.

While the Super Tucano may not be as well known as some of its larger and more powerful counterparts, its unique combination of capabilities and affordability has earned it a place among the world’s most respected military aircraft.

A fleet of three A-29 Super Tucano planes, originally purchased by an organization that later abandoned its plans, has found a new home at the United States Air Force Test Pilot School.

The planes, which arrived at Edwards Air Force Base in California last week, will join the school’s existing fleet of trainers. This marks a significant milestone for the school, as it is the first time in three decades that it has received newly assigned aircraft.

The A-29 Super Tucanos are ideal for pilot training due to their modern avionics, ability to carry a variety of payloads on wing pylons, and unique airframe design, which allows for spin testing.

These capabilities will enable the school to experiment with various multi domain sensors and weapons, potentially reducing the reliance on the aging T-38 and F-16 planes currently in use.

The deployment of the A-29 Super Tucanos to the United States Air Force Test Pilot School is expected to further enhance the plane’s reputation. To date, Embraer reports that all of the A-29 Super Tucanos currently flying have logged a combined 550,000 flight hours, including over 60,000 flight hours during combat missions.
