Despite the potential for electric vehicles (EVs) to be charged directly from solar panels, the reality is that car manufacturers have largely overlooked this opportunity. While many EV owners already harness solar energy at home to power their vehicles, on the road charging remains a challenge.

This is primarily due to the lack of compatible infrastructure in EVs, which typically require additional equipment to interface with solar panels.

Solar generators, which combine solar panels, inverters, and battery storage, offer a solution for those seeking to charge EVs using solar power on the go. However, even these setups can be complex and require some technical know how to integrate with the car’s charging system.

As a result, many EV owners are left with limited options for solar-powered charging, relying on aftermarket solutions or creative workarounds.

Tommy’s innovative solar powered charging system for his Cybertruck utilizes portable solar panels, a solar generator, and a modified electrical setup. The latter requires technical expertise to prevent damage.

With his current configuration, he can generate approximately 4 kWh per day, sufficient to drive 12 miles. Expanding the solar panel array would increase the power output, but the solar generator’s maximum capacity of 2,550 watts limits it to approximately 13 kWh daily, enabling it to drive 40 miles.
