Brooklyn-based startup Itselectric is transforming urban EV charging with compact curbside chargers, addressing the pressing need for accessible infrastructure in densely populated cities.
By compensating property owners who host chargers, Itselectric offers an innovative solution for New Yorkers who rely on street parking.
As the U.S. targets 50% EV adoption by 2030, the demand for urban charging infrastructure is soaring. New York City anticipates EV registrations to climb from 62,000 to 3 million by the same year, but city dwellers face challenges finding charging stations.
Itselectric, with its motto “Power from the People,” aims to bridge this gap by expanding NYC’s EV network from 1,400 to 10,000 stations by 2030.
Itselectric’s chargers, smaller than a fire hydrant, are designed to integrate seamlessly into urban settings. They provide an affordable charging option, costing users around $10 per session, with most revenue passed to property owners.
Hosting a charger could earn homeowners an estimated $3,500 annually, thanks to separate meters ensuring no impact on their own electricity bills.
Specializing in Level 2 chargers, which take 4-10 hours for a full charge, Its electric focuses on overnight charging. This aligns with the Department of Transportation’s recommendation to prioritize Level 2 chargers over energy-intensive Level 3 units.
Backed by $11.8M in investments from firms like Uber, Itselectric is scaling operations across Brooklyn, Detroit, and soon Boston, Jersey City, and Los Angeles. Co-founders Nathan King and Tiya Gordon envision a sustainable transportation future, powered by their innovative chargers and a growing EV ecosystem.
