Noise regulations in their current form fail to adequately preserve the tranquility of our neighborhoods during nighttime hours.

Residents in northeast Salem, including myself, are frequently disturbed by loud cars, which create disruptive noise levels until midnight and often beyond.

This relentless disturbance has led to many sleepless nights, significantly impacting my ability to perform well at work the following day.

The culprits behind this noise are vehicles equipped with custom exhaust systems, specifically designed to amplify sound and, as some sources suggest, enhance speed.

Impact on Sleep and Public Safety

The issue extends beyond nighttime disturbances; these loud vehicles pose comfort and safety challenges during the day as well. Below is a list of reasons supporting the notion that such modifications should be prohibited:

Restorative sleep is as essential to human health as food and water. Sleep is a critical component for survival, and children require adequate rest for proper development.

Even minor sleep disturbances can disrupt daily functioning. For adults, a lack of sleep compromises work quality, leading to potential loss of productivity and income for employers. In high-stakes professions, such as medicine, the consequences of fatigue can affect the lives of others.

Certain individuals possess a heightened sensitivity to loud sounds. For various medical or personal reasons, some people experience extreme discomfort or pain due to loud noises at any time of day. This sensitivity can transform what might be merely annoying for others into a distressing experience.

The presence of loud vehicles on the streets creates hazards for other motorists and pedestrians. The overwhelming noise can confuse drivers and mask critical sounds, such as emergency sirens or warning horns, putting pedestrians at risk by obstructing their awareness of approaching vehicles.
