The automaker cites shifting consumer demand as it pulls plug-in hybrid programs from North America, though hybrids, EVs, and range-extended models remain in the pipeline.

Stellantis reportedly ends all plug-in hybrid programs in North America. Eco-friendly models from Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep are affected. Hybrids, EVs, and range-extended EVs will continue to be offered.

Jeep had planned to launch a Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid last year, but the project was quietly cancelled last fall. At the time, Stellantis told suppliers that the decision reflected evolving customer preferences for propulsion systems and a reassessment of its product strategy.

This came as a surprise, considering the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe were among the most popular plug-in hybrids in the U.S. Today, it appears Stellantis is going further, reportedly ending all plug-in hybrid programs in North America.

A spokesperson told: “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

This marks the end for the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, as well as the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. It also likely signals the cancellation of the Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid, following a pattern similar to the Alfa Romeo Tonale, which moves to gas-only for 2026.

Stellantis’s retreat from plug-in hybrids likely goes beyond market demand. The plug-in hybrid Jeeps faced multiple fire-related recalls, and production of new models has been restricted by a stop-sale order. The combination of popularity and persistent technical headaches seems to have prompted the company to call it quits.

The Wrangler 4xe, for context, was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor, producing a combined 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) and offering an electric-only range of 22 miles (35 km).

Despite this, Stellantis isn’t stepping back from electrification. The redesigned Jeep Cherokee now comes standard with a hybridized 1.6-liter turbo engine, and the company is developing range-extended versions of the Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500, signaling that full electrification remains a priority.
