The first services granted entry with the iOS 26.4 release are OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.

Apple CarPlay is set to receive one of its most consequential updates with the forthcoming iOS 26.4 release, expected to roll out to compatible iPhones globally this spring.

The first developer beta became available on February 18, followed by the initial public beta on February 20. Beyond broader iPhone enhancements, the update delivers notable changes for CarPlay users.

For the first time, drivers using CarPlay will be able to interact with intelligent voice assistants other than Siri. Third-party AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, will be accessible directly through the in-car interface.

These AI-powered chatbots will support hands-free communication through the CarPlay system. Apple is reportedly introducing a redesigned, customizable voice control interface tailored to deliver vehicle-optimized chatbot interactions.

According to Money Control, apps will be permitted to display minimal, vehicle-friendly visual cues during active chatbot sessions, supplementing spoken responses with simplified on-screen feedback.

However, Apple is deliberately limiting functionality. Third-party AI applications will not be authorized to adjust vehicle systems or modify iPhone settings.

There will also be no wake-word capability, meaning users cannot activate Gemini with “Hey Google,” for example. Instead, drivers must manually open the respective chatbot app before initiating voice interaction. Once launched, communication remains voice-driven.

Following the official release, CarPlay users can expect a wave of updates as AI developers integrate compatibility into their applications.

Allowing external AI assistants into the CarPlay ecosystem grants companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic direct integration within Apple’s in-vehicle platform. At the same time, Apple is maintaining strict control over safety parameters and system access.

Third-party chatbot usage must align with Apple’s emphasis on minimizing distracted driving. Even with these guardrails, the move represents a structural shift. CarPlay users will no longer be confined exclusively to Siri and will instead be able to select the AI assistant that best aligns with their preferences.

In addition to expanding AI support, Apple CarPlay will introduce in-car video playback for select applications, including the Apple TV app. This feature will function only when the vehicle is stationary, addressing safety concerns. The capability provides passengers with additional entertainment options during parked scenarios, such as waiting or charging sessions.
