For the first time, the next-generation Range Rover Velar will be offered solely as a fully electric vehicle.

The current Velar is widely regarded as one of Land Rover’s most design-focused products. Place it beside its successor, however, and the outgoing model may appear comparatively rounded and conventional.

Recent prototype images indicate that the upcoming Velar shifts decisively toward a lower, more sedan-like stance, departing from the upright proportions traditionally associated with SUVs.

Although JLR engineers have applied extensive camouflage, the overall silhouette is difficult to disguise. Beneath the black-and-white wrap, the prototype reveals a noticeably lower roofline and a dramatically revised rear section.

The proportions suggest a crossover that prioritizes road presence and aerodynamic efficiency over classic SUV height.

Visually, the new Velar reads as a blend between a sedan and a crossover. Its profile evokes comparisons to vehicles such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and more recently the Volvo ES90.

Land Rover has not publicly detailed the reasoning behind this design shift, but it likely serves to better distinguish the Velar from both the larger Range Rover Sport and the smaller Range Rover Evoque.

The move is also interpreted as a strategic response to the Porsche Macan Electric, positioning the Velar as a more road-oriented entry within the Range Rover portfolio rather than a traditional off-road-focused SUV.

Despite the substantial changes in overall shape, certain front-end cues remain consistent. The prototype features slim, angled headlights and a prominent grille treatment. Pop-out door handles are visible, along with roof rails.

Two sizeable shark-fin modules sit atop the roof, separated by a centrally mounted camera, a configuration increasingly common across Land Rover’s latest models.

One notable detail is a pronounced hump interrupting the sharply sloped rear window. This feature appears temporary and is unlikely to carry over to the final production design.

Beyond its exterior transformation, the next Velar stands out because it will be sold exclusively as an electric vehicle.

It will ride on JLR’s new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), making its debut under the Velar before extending to other models, including the upcoming compact Defender variant.

Because the Velar transitions to an entirely new platform, detailed powertrain specifications remain undisclosed.

It could share the 117 kWh battery pack used in the larger Range Rover Electric, though such a unit may prove excessive in size and mass for a vehicle positioned below it in the lineup.

Interior imagery has yet to surface, as photographers have not secured clear cabin shots. However, given the significant redesign of the exterior, substantial updates inside the cabin would be consistent with the model’s repositioning.

The new Velar EV is expected to make its official debut in the coming months. Production is scheduled to commence in 2027 at JLR’s Halewood facility, where it will be assembled alongside the forthcoming Defender Sport and potentially the next-generation Evoque.
