Review of the 2024 VW ID4 82 kWh Pro S: Enhanced Power and Extended Range

The 2024 Volkswagen ID4 remains a top contender in the EV market, securing its position as the fifth-best-selling EV in the U.S.

With over a quarter-million units sold globally last year, Volkswagen is keen on keeping the ID4 fresh with new technological updates for the 2024 model year, particularly for the variant equipped with the larger battery pack.

Let’s delve into what’s new and how it performs in real-world scenarios: are the enhancements to the drive unit and infotainment system substantial?

Externally, both the 62 kWh and 82 kWh battery pack options for the 2024 ID4 electric SUV remain largely unchanged. However, Pro S models now feature 21-inch wheels, and the illuminated front and rear VW badges introduced in a previous update continue for the new model year.

While the basic setup and trim configurations remain consistent, the models with the larger battery pack have received updates to their motor drive units and interior screens, offering a refreshed experience for prospective buyers.

Enhancements to the 82 kWh Pack: The 82 kWh battery pack version of the ID4 boasts enhanced magnet strength and improved friction management in the motor unit. These enhancements, coupled with improvements to the stator and inverter design, result in increased power output and improved thermal management.

Rear-wheel drive models with the 82 kWh pack now deliver 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, offering quicker acceleration and extended range. The driving range has also seen an improvement, with rear-wheel drive models capable of traveling up to 291 miles on a single charge and all-wheel drive models achieving a range of 263 miles.

Driving Experience: During a test drive of the updated 82 kWh Pro S model, the improved acceleration was immediately apparent, translating into enhanced performance on straightaways and through corners.

The ID4 exhibited consistent power delivery and handled corners with stability, while the regeneration system allowed for significant mileage recovery during downhill stretches. The cabin’s noise insulation proved effective, with minimal external disturbances observed during the drive.

Interior Enhancements: The interior of the 2024 ID4 now features a larger screen and an optional premium audio system for models equipped with the 82 kWh battery pack.

The 12.9-inch touchscreen offers additional customization options and improved route planning capabilities. Notably, the infotainment system includes the full ID4 owner’s manual in digital format, accessible directly from the screen.

Pricing and Options: Starting at $49,995 for the 82 kWh Pro S model, the ID4 remains eligible for the full Federal Tax Credit of up to $7,500 in the U.S., making it an attractive option for EV buyers. Additional costs may apply for custom paint options and destination fees, with our test model priced at $51,815 before incentives.

Overall, the 2024 Volkswagen ID4 with the 82 kWh battery pack offers enhanced performance, extended range, and improved technology, maintaining its appeal as a competitive choice in the electric SUV market.
