Sony and Honda have been teasing an electric and autonomous car project known as Afeela for about four years now. The joint venture aims to introduce a new suite of “experiences” to the automotive space despite the challenge of entering a crowded marketplace with a new-agency name.
We had the opportunity to examine a prototype of the Afeela, offering insights into its onboard technology and entertainment features. Although we couldn’t open the hood or trunk or even access the center console storage, the prototype provided valuable insights into Afeela’s design philosophy.
The Afeela embodies a clean and uncluttered aesthetic designed to allow for extensive customization options that reflect the owner’s personality.
Despite being backed by industry giants Sony and Honda, the Afeela maintains a low-key profile, with minimal branding from both companies. According to a representative, Sony Honda Mobility is a distinct entity that is separate from its parent companies.
The car boasts innovative features like the Media Bar, a customizable display that offers various information and personalized messages.
Notably, the Afeela adopts a buttonless design for its doors, which can be operated via proximity fob, phone app, or facial recognition. Inside, the cabin resembles that of a modern concept car, with a panoramic touchscreen dominating the dashboard.
The Afeela’s infotainment system is a standout feature, offering a range of digital entertainment options, including movies, video games, and karaoke. The car supports remote gameplay from Sony PlayStation consoles, allowing users to seamlessly transition from home to car gaming sessions.
Customization options extend to themed interiors, with designs inspired by popular Sony properties like Spider-Man and Gran Turismo. Moreover, the Afeela incorporates Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities powered by advanced AI technology for enhanced safety and adaptability.
While specific details regarding powertrain, battery capacity, and pricing remain undisclosed, the Afeela is slated for AWD configuration, with pre-orders expected to commence next year and deliveries scheduled for 2026.
Afeela represents a significant step towards creating a mobile entertainment hub, albeit with some uncertainties regarding its positioning within the automotive market.
Despite its focus on digital experiences, questions remain about its ability to deliver a dynamic driving experience synonymous with Honda’s brand heritage. Nonetheless, Afeela’s innovative features and immersive entertainment offerings make it a compelling prospect for tech-savvy consumers.
