Google has implemented a long-awaited enhancement for Android Auto, now labeling apps that can’t be used while driving. Certain apps like Google Maps, Waze, and Spotify are designed for use while driving, permitting interaction even when the vehicle is in motion.
This functionality is crucial for apps like Waze, which relies on user input for traffic reports and hazards. However, apps like YouTube or gaming apps are restricted while driving, as they pose distractions to the driver.
Android Auto now displays a “P” label on apps’ icons that are only available when parked, allowing users to discern before launching.
This feature debuted in Android Auto version 11.4, expected to be available to all users gradually. Despite installing Android Auto 11.5 beta, the feature remained inaccessible, likely due to a phased rollout.
While enhancing safety, this feature raises questions about YouTube’s continued absence on Android Auto. Google has released YouTube on Android Automotive but maintains its exclusion from Android Auto. Users must wait for the full release to enjoy consistent access to these features.
