Rivian drivers can now access Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, as the company begins shipping complimentary adapters to existing Rivian owners next month. With over 15,000 Superchargers across North America, Rivian vehicles, including the R1S SUV and R1T truck, can seamlessly tap into Tesla’s charging infrastructure.
Following industry trends, Rivian has decided to transition to the Tesla-style NACS charging port, accompanied by the creation of adapters for existing Rivian models equipped with the CCS port. The complimentary NACS adapters, compatible with V3 chargers operating at 250 kilowatts, will be distributed to owners starting in the coming month.
In addition to adapter distribution, Rivian has integrated Supercharger compatibility into its navigation system, providing drivers with visibility into charger speeds and availability.
The “plug and charge” feature facilitates automatic billing, streamlining the charging process without the need for separate apps or accounts.
During our testing with a NACS adapter on our long-term Rivian R1T at a local Supercharger network, we found the charging experience to be efficient and user-friendly. Simply selecting the Supercharger location on the touchscreen navigation, parking, and plugging in the adapter initiated the charging process seamlessly.
For Rivian owners encountering any navigation discrepancies, adjusting the settings to display Superchargers can resolve the issue. While future Rivian models will come factory-equipped with the NACS charge port by 2025, current owners can leverage the free adapters to access Tesla’s Supercharger network, expanding their charging options significantly.
