Tesla has decided to stop supporting Steam gaming in new Model S and Model X vehicles. For nearly two years, people who owned these cars could play lots of different games, like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3.
The reason for stopping this feature hasn’t been explained by Tesla. According to Electrek, Tesla told new owners that “the gaming computer in your Model X is being updated, so your car can’t play Steam games anymore. But other things like music and apps will still work.” It’s not clear if people who already have these cars can still play games.
Tesla has been interested in in-car gaming for a while. The idea is that when you’re waiting for your car to charge or for an order, you can play a game to pass the time. But at first, Tesla let people play games while driving, which was unsafe and had to change.
Tesla might have stopped supporting Steam games because it’s not doing so well financially. The company’s sales and revenue went down for the first time in a while, so it had to let go of some workers and even whole software teams. Maybe supporting Steam games was too expensive or people weren’t using it enough. Since the Model S and Model X don’t sell as much as the Model 3 and Model Y, it might not have been worth it for Tesla to keep this feature.
