Dashcam footage capturing a Tesla Model 3 with FSD narrowly avoiding a train has become viral online. The car’s owner claims that the self-driving system didn’t detect the moving train and the railway crossing. In the video, the Tesla is seen driving in heavy fog when it approaches the crossing. The FSD doesn’t react, leading the driver to quickly swerve to avoid the train. The car ends up hitting the crossing boom, causing damage to the Model 3.

Although FSD is considered advanced and safe, it’s only a Level 2 autonomous driving system. This means the driver must remain attentive and aware of road conditions. In this case, the driver reacted just in time, possibly expecting the FSD to take control. Fortunately, the car didn’t hit the train. At the time of the incident, the car was traveling at around 61-63 mph.

The driver claims to have suffered minor injuries from the crash but didn’t need medical attention. He also mentioned that this was the second time in six months that the FSD “tried to drive directly into a passing train.” The footage has sparked debates online, with some blaming the driver for relying too much on FSD, while others criticize the system for not detecting the crossing.

Many drivers tend to trust safety systems like FSD too much, often letting the car handle driving tasks. However, relying excessively on these systems can be risky. The driver involved in the incident acknowledges his responsibility but highlights the FSD’s failure to recognize the train. He emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant, even when using advanced driving assistance systems like FSD.
