Tesla’s latest report doesn’t mention its plan to deliver 20 million cars each year by 2030. This shows the company might be changing its focus from making lots of cars to working on robotaxis.

In 2020, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, said he wanted Tesla to sell 20 million cars by 2030. That’s almost twice as many as Toyota, the biggest car company in the world, sells.

The company said, “We want to make and deliver 20 million cars a year by 2030. To do this, we need to make our cars easier for people to buy.” They repeated this goal in their report in 2022.

But now, Musk and Tesla are changing their plans. They’re focusing more on making cars that can drive themselves, called autonomous driving technology. They’re going to show their robotaxi, called “Cybercab,” on August 8.

Last month, Musk said Tesla would use its current cars to make new cheaper ones instead of making a completely new model that was supposed to cost $25,000. After this news, Tesla’s shares dropped about 2% on Thursday.

Tesla used to grow very fast, but now it’s having some problems. Not as many people want electric cars, and there are more companies making them. Tesla is trying to change things by laying off more than 10% of its workers and focusing on robotaxis, humanoid robots, and self-driving technology.

Back in April, Reuters said Tesla canceled the cheaper car they promised to make. Investors thought this car would help Tesla grow into a big car company for everyone, but now Tesla is more interested in robotaxis.

Last year, Tesla sold 1.81 million cars, which was 38% more than in 2022. But it’s not as much as Musk wanted three years ago when he said Tesla would grow by 50% each year.
