Toyota has sparked excitement among SUV enthusiasts by hinting at the arrival of a redesigned 4Runner through a series of Instagram Posts. The automaker shared images showcasing each iteration of the 4Runner, culminating in a partial sneak peek of the forthcoming sixth generation. Accompanying the images was a challenge inviting fans to guess the model year of each 4Runner redesign.
While Toyota has remained tight-lipped about specific details regarding the new 4Runner, it’s anticipated that the upcoming model will share a platform with the recently revamped Tacoma midsize pickup truck.
The Tacoma, which underwent a redesign for the 2024 model year, shares Toyota’s TNGA-F body-on-frame platform with the full-size Tundra and Sequoia SUV. With the teaser campaign underway, industry observers predict that the new 4Runner will likely debut for the 2025 model year, suggesting a potential reveal later in the current year.
Currently available for the 2024 model year, the existing 4Runner is equipped with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine generating 270 horsepower, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the trim level, the vehicle offers either rear-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive. Building upon the extensive options offered in the new Tacoma, it’s anticipated that the redesigned 4Runner will boast enhanced features compared to its predecessor.
For instance, the Tacoma lineup includes a 2.4-liter turbo-4 engine available in various power configurations, including a hybrid variant. Most Tacoma models come equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, with a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching offered on the base SR trim.
The new generation of the 4Runner is expected to maintain its diverse range of trim levels, including the popular TRD off-road variants. While pricing details are yet to be confirmed, it’s speculated that the starting price may see a modest increase from the current $41,850 sticker.
